NEW! MOVING MEDITATION CLASSES Offered by Gianna at Mountain Bodhi, each Wednesday morning a different aspect of meditation is presented. Dharma talk and Centering is followed by an hour of active engagement in Moving Meditation focusing on inner movement (breathing, imagery, meridian energy clearing), and outer movement ("dance," free form expressive movement, Japanese "Undo", healing movement therapy for release of held emotions, and The Eight Brocades, sitting and standing are taught in a series, a few each week. This meditation class reflects Gianna's many years of study in varied methods and schools. Meditation is good for your soul. It really has little to do with concepts such as emptying your mind or controlling thoughts and emotions. At Avanti Healing Arts® meditation classes, you are encouraged to allow into awareness whatever IS with acceptance and to practice non-attachment. It is a way of BEING that brings joy and harmony, not just a method or technique. As such, anyone can do it!You learn” how to” meditate if you are a beginner, to deepen your practice if you are more advanced, and to observe and experience your authentic self free from perceptions, expectations, personality, mind and other hindrances, because as the Heart Sutra says, “without any hindrances no fears exist.” Meditation became popular in the United States in the 1960’s promoting teachings and practice from Hindu, Taoist, or Buddhist traditions --- and it has now exploded into hundreds of specialty forms. New York City in the 1970’s was a mecca for Eastern philosophy. Gurus from India such as the Maharishi Maharesh Yogi (founder of Transcendental Meditation) were inspiring seekers to study new ways of experiencing consciousness. Gianna’s first formal meditation training was with the Self Realization Fellowship founded by Sri Paramahansa Yogananda. There were so many wonderful teachers to choose from! She studied Hatha and Kriya Yoga and later took classes in Vippassana, Siddha and other schools of meditation. finally with Tibetan Buddhism Gianna took Refuge in the Nyingmapa (lineage of the Kempo Rimpoches) and later in the Gelugpa (Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tsetan) tradition of the Dalai Lama. She has twice traveled and trekked in Nepal to experience the traditions first hand. She also studied Native American meditation with Dhyani Ywahoo, Cherokee Medicine lineage holder (Sunray Meditation Society), currently studies Lakota ways, and has taken workshops in Shamanism and Sound Healing (drumming, chanting and toning). Gianna was baptized Roman Catholic and prayer is an important aspect of her daily meditation. Along with a practical “Just For Today” philosophy, she practices daily Reiki (joyful harmony for mind-body-spirit) with breathing and movement meditations outdoors in Nature to keep her grounded. Becoming a Reiki Shihan (teacher) on the Gokui Kaiden level of Japanese Gendai Reiki Ho came after teaching other schools of Reiki, among them the popular Karuna Reiki® and Usui-Tibetan Reiki). She works with a wide variety of purification and rejuvenation practices from Reiki which we call “meditation” in the Western world. Also, she was one of only 23 licensed teachers worldwide to teach for the prestigious International Center for Reiki Training for several years. Japanese Reiki breathing and imagery in simple forms will be presented in her Meditation Classes, such as kokyu and gyoshi-ho, which Gianna will facilitate with Reiki. Learning Reiki itself is not itself part of this meditation class but can be studied separately at a reduced rate for her regular meditation students. During and after her PhD Doctorate in Psychology in 1979 she attended numerous workshops and training programs (and taught mind-body methods of managing stress, pain and mental- emotional imbalances) to name a few: hypnosis with Theodore X. Barber and Milton Erickson, Progressive Relaxation, Biofeedback, EMDR. Energy medicine became a specialty and she attended workshops given by many greats in this area such as Bernie Siegel (Love, Medicine and Miracles), Jon Kabat-Zinn (Wherever You Go, There You Are), Caroline Myss (Why People Don’t Heal), Mona Lisa Schultz (Awakening Intuition). After over 25 years of Clinical Psychology private practice, she no longer is involved with conventional treatment but instead does Emotional Healing work combining energy psychology into her meditation practice along with Reiki and Dance.
"It is important to me to be mindful of every small thing, to practice allowance with compassion, and to not lose sight of who we really are. It is not important what you achieve, how many teachers and degrees you have, or what religion or philosophy you follow, as long as you live and learn from your inner guidance the experience your Higher Self has for you in this incarnation. This is your life, live it!"

The Heart Chakra Dance© from her Reiki Healing Dance™ Course and Undo (Japanese Movement), along with expressive, interpretive, kinetic and popular dance, inspired the Movement Meditation series. She was influenced by Thich Nat Han’s "walking meditation", and observed from her own experience the benefits for mind and emotion, not only for body, of movement to induce clearing and healing in a way that reaches deep into cellular memory. Movement can be within and experienced as stillness, or without and expressed as“big” energy. All classes are Reiki facilitated but no dance or energy healing experience is needed to attend.
Gianna’s Dance Training was primarily in New York City as a four year scholarship student with the American Ballet Theater, and with many of the "greats" of European and Russian dance that era as well as the Martha Graham School, and jazz teachers such as Luigi and Max Mattox. She later lived and worked in Paris, France where she danced professionally as a jazz and ballet soloist with Theatre du Chatelet and other theaters. Along with Danny Strayhorn, she created the Funky Chicken for Polydor Records (yes, it's really true). Back in the States she studied Ballroom and was especially attracted to Latin and Argentine Tango which she loves to dance. Studies in Tai Chi and Qi Gong were with several instructors after moving to Maine, among them 96 year old QiGong Master Duan Zhi Liang of Beijing. The influence of all of these movement forms show up in her Reiki Healing Dance™ which she has taught internationally.
About meditation, Gianna says, "My approach to Moving Meditation reflects my belief that there are many pathways to healing, no one right way. Being Italian, another way to say this is "all roads lead to Rome." I do teach form but at the same time I encourage everyone to express themselves in my classes in their own way and have fun doing it--- because I like the journey more than the destination. I enjoy the possibilities that open up with experimentation."
